This time of year is widely known as the cold and flu season, but in actuality the flu is apparent in society year round. In Fall and Winter our immune system is weakened which makes our body less capable of fighting off these sicknesses. Your immune system can be weakened from many things during the Fall and Winter. A few of these factors are being indoors with poor air quality, the chemicals you surround yourself with in your home, lack of sunlight, depressed mental health, stress, lack of exercise, and lack of fresh organic produce. Holistically combating the cold in flu starts with eliminating these immune suppressing factors.
Here are 8 easy things you can do to holistically prevent and combat the flu
1. Increase Vitamins A, D and K.
Through whole foods or vitamin supplements. These vitamins help to fortify the bodies immune system.
2. Take a Shot of Fire Cider Every Morning.

3. Fermented Garlic Honey Instead Of Cough Syrup.
Fermented garlic honey makes an amazing immune-boosting cough syrup that should be in your medicine cabinet year round! The garlic contains many medicinal compounds that help fight off the cold and flu, whereas the raw honey is antibacterial, soothes the digestive tract and is full of antioxidants. Fermenting the two together makes a tasty yet powerful immune boosting plant medicine that can strengthen the immune system, sooth sore throats, suppress coughing and suppress nausea.
Take 1 tsp as needed.
How to make: Peel and crush enough garlic to a pint sized mason jar. To maximize the health benefits, you should crush the garlic at room temperature and allow it to sit for about 15 minutes. That triggers an enzyme reaction that boosts the healthy compounds in garlic. Once it has sat for 15 mins you can submerge the garlic in raw honey and cover the mason jar with a lid. After a few days the honey should bubble and get thinner, this is a natural fermenting process that protects the garlic clove as well as adds natural probiotics to the honey mixture. Allow to ferment for 4 weeks, strain and store in airtight container. This can be stored unrefrigerated for a long time. If the honey crystalizes you can put the jar in a double boiler to melt it.
4. Elderberry Syrup
We make elderberry syrup by infusing the elderberries with raw honey. This is another immune boosting honey infusion that should be in your medicine cabinet year round. The tasty purple infusion is perfect for kiddos over 1yrs old for boosting their immune system and helping to fight off the cold and Flu. The elderberries are packed with antioxidants and vitamins that help prevent fight off the cold and flu, whereas the raw honey is antibacterial, soothes the digestive tract and is full of antioxidants.
Take 1 tablespoon every morning and every night before bed. Hot to make: In a pint sized mason jar, add 1 cup of dried elderberries and fill the rest of the jar with raw honey, leaving 2 inches of room at the top so it can mix. Let infused for 3 weeks, every day flip the mason jar alternating from resting on its lid to on its bottom. This will naturally stir the infusion. After 3 weeks strain and store.
Have by the table spoon by mouth or add into hot teas. You can also add these additional herbs in your teas along with the elderberry honey mixture for more immune boosting effects. Cinnamon Chips, Whole Cloves, Ginger, Organic Orange Peel, Wild Cherry Bark, Rose-hips, Cardamom Pods
5. Increase your intake of probiotics.
