Natural Dyes and Earth Pigments

by Kele Carter published 05/07/2018

Following Holistic Huts social media journey, people may be surprised at what I choose for colorants or base liquids in our body products . In today's society we have strayed so far from our origins that raw and natural is borderline taboo. So I thought I would explain earth pigments, what they are, the roles they play and their origins.

Earth pigments are colorants derived from nature. At Holistic Hut we chose vegan pigments of the highest quality, all non gmo and fair trade.

People have been using earth pigments such as charcoal, clay, chared bone, herbs, flowers, ground minerals and spices to make art and body products for eons . We have all studied earth pigment back in grade school while studying history's ancient civilizations. Current experts say the first wall art dates back 164,000 years ago in our homeland Africa using ocher pigment, of course the cavemen 40,000 years ago and their cave drawings in Eurasia telling their ancient primal story through art and earth, to more recent l indiginous tribes who wore vibrant tribal symbols and war paint made from their available resources, to the first makeup products that kings and queens would wear, spanning all the way to present day where you can find them in the soap we make here at Holistic Hut. Earth pigments have always played a huge role in art and body, but recently they are fading from the market and being replaced by cheaper inorganic options.

Holistic Hut values and respects the earth and its abundance, and has studied earth pigments and their

uses over the last few years. Earth pigments have a broad spectrum of colors, ranging from earthy tones to vibrant bright colors that you would be surprised are possible from all natural ingredients. Chosing earth pigments for our body products not only keeps our soap tied to ancient origins and keeps our products pure, but it also adds in holistic healing benefits.

Dating back to healing practices from our ancestral healers and shamans, its made clear medicinal herbs play an important part to increasing quality of not only body products but quality of life. Their topical benefits can range from the ability to; fix blemishes and imperfections on your skin, help with muscle soreness and inflammation, rejuvenate and tighten the skin, providing uplifting or calming effects, honestly the versatility of plants and nature is endless. Holistic Hut provides explanations of each product and their contents in our posts so make sure to check them out on our Instagram! @Holistic_Hut
